Bio

I’m a mid-twenties financial manager by day/writer by night. I’m also a poet and have performed at several spoken word venues across the nation. Due to an affinity for spicy foods and extreme temperatures, I currently reside in Austin, Texas. At the moment, I’m simply surviving and fighting to maintain as much of myself and as many of the things I love as this incessant migraine will allow.

    Hi,

I found this because you linked to it on one of your posts at the Muse Conference. I’m a licensed massage therapist specializing in pain (and a writer), and I was wondering if you had had any bodywork done?

Please email me, because I might have some suggestions to help you. I originally went into massage because I found out it could get rid of my horrendous 3-day headaches that nothing else could help. I can imagine what you are going through, because my headaches are horrible, but can’t REALLY imagine what you are going through, since my headaches have gone away, but yours hasn’t. Yikes!

Take care, and I hope I hear from you soon.

    Hi,

I love your post entitled, “Welcome to the Wolrd of Dr. House.” It reminds of exactly how I felt when I had an eight week vertigo/migraine episode and it took three doctors to figure out I was having migraines and not an inner ear infection or a tumor! I wanted so badly to have Dr. House (I know he’s fictional, but still!) diagnose me.

My neurologist put me on a prednisone taper and that has been my treatment for refractory migraines every since. Thankfully I only had to do the taper four times last year, but that is still so much of that drug. I found that was the only thing I could do to treat these, though, when my various abortive treatments failed. I’ve used Topamax, Lexapro and a constant dose of birth control pill (to stop my period completely) as preventative treatments. Imetrix, Maxalt and now Migranal for abortive treatments. My current neurologist (insurance changes forced me to change) took me off all of those heavy side effect drugs and started me on Vitamin B-2, CoQ10 and now Butterbur. The first two did nothing but the Butterbur (though I really dragged my feet on these over-the-counter natural methods) has seen me through a dramatic change these past few months.

I don’t have suggestions for you other than telling you all the different things I’ve desperately tried, but please take comfort that I know how frusterating it is to be forced to have your life revolve around pain, dizziness, ear ringing and nausea. I have two little girls and a husband to take care of and my life, our lives, have changed so dramatically since I got sick two years ago. Life is finally leveling out for me and I’m slowly gaining trust and hope that I can pick up things from where I left them.

I started a blog on migraines, as well: migrainefamily.blogspot.com. If you ever want to commiserate, I’m here.

    Kimberlee
